Western U prof's talk, Transplant Symposium among week's highlights

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

Monday, Oct. 7

Neurobiology faculty to explore circadian rhythm implications

Dr. Harry Pantazopoulos, UMMC assistant professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences, will give the UMMC Department of Cell and Molecular Biology presentation, "Microglial Associated Circadian Rhythms of Perineuronal Net Composition: Implications for Memory Consolidation," at 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, in classroom 3A.

Tuesday, Oct. 8

Western U professor to focus on visuomotor control substrates

Dr. Brian D. Corneil, professor of physiology and pharmacology and professor of psychology at the Brain and Mind Institute, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada, will give the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Responding When Time is of the Essence: Determining the Substrates for Fast Visuomotor Control," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in classroom 3A (room N318 on the North Wing).

Wednesday, Oct. 9

Medicine prof, palliative nav to talk effective communication

Dr. J. Keith Mansel, UMMC professor of medicine and director of palliative and supportive care services, and Carole Ward, UMMC palliative nurse navigator, will give the UMMC Department of Surgery Grand Rounds presentation, "Effective Communication and Decision Making in Health Care," from 8-9 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in room CW 106 of the Classroom Wing.

Physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and other interested health care providers are invited. Continuing education credit is available. 

Physiology instructor to relate antihypertensive device response

Dr. John Clemmer, UMMC instructor in the Department of Computational Medicine, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, will give the Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Mechanisms of Response and Nonresponse to Antihypertensive Devices," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Thursday-Friday, Oct. 10-11

StL prof, Miss Mississippi among Transplant Symposium speakers

​Dr. Krista Lentine, professor of medicine and director of living donation at the Saint Louis University Transplant Center, Miss Mississippi Mary Margaret Hyer, UMMC transplant faculty members, an organ donor and a UMMC patient who received a liver transplant are scheduled to speak during University Transplant's annual Mississippi Transplant Symposium Thursday-Friday, Oct. 10-11, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall.

Topics will include trends in transplantation, increasing access to care and the process of being a live donor. Continuing education is available. 

Monday, Oct. 14

UAB nephrology prof to offer childhood CV disease insights

Dr. Jennifer S. Pollock, professor and endowed scholar in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology and co-director of cardio-renal physiology and medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Seminar Series presentation, "Mechanistic Insights of Childhood Adversity Mediated Risk of Cardiovascular Disease," at noon on Monday, Oct. 14, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Tuesday, Oct. 15

Vice chancellor to speak at fall faculty meeting​

Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for health affairs, is scheduled to speak at the fall faculty meeting set for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Woodward will provide an update for the Medical Center and faculty with 20 years of service will be recognized. Flu shots will be available before and after the meeting from Student and Employee Health. Lunch will be available on a first-come basis.

Full-time faculty with 20 years or more of continuous faculty service should contact Dorothy Singleton by Sunday, Sept. 1.

Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 16-17

Biobank Mississippi to host precision medicine research initiative

Biobank Mississippi will host a "Precision Medicine Research Initiative" in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic to bring awareness and engagement about precision medicine from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 16-17, in the Guyton Research Center breezeway.

The event will include food trucks, giveaways and precision medicine information.

Chief medical officer to record UMMC's quality journey

Dr. J. Michael Henderson, chief medical officer, will give the Department of Pathology Grand Rounds presentation, "UMMC Quality Journey," from 7-8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, in classroom R354.

Continuing medical education credit will be available. 

Wednesday, Oct. 17

Ruckdeschel to host CCRI director's meetings Oct. 17

Dr. John Ruckdeschel, UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute director, will host the quarterly Cancer Center and Research Institute Director’s Meetings on Thursday, Oct. 17.

The first meeting will take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Guyton Library on the first floor of the Guyton Research Center and the second meeting will take place from 4-5 p.m. in room MK1109 at the Jackson Medical Mall.

All UMMC and University of Mississippi employees who work with cancer patients are invited. The meetings will include an overview of CCRI objectives, an update on progress toward those objectives and a question-and-answer session.

Refreshments will be available.

Medicine prof to give 'personal pioneers narrative' GWIMS talk

Dr. Nita Maihle, UMMC professor of medicine and associate director of research at the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute, will give the UMMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science Seminar Series presentation, "Pioneers in Women's Health: A Personal Narrative," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

Lunch will be available on a first-come basis. 

 Wednesday, Oct. 23

UMMC to host SCCM 'bite-sized' lecture series

​Dr. Christa O'Hana S. Nobleza, UMMC assistant professor of neurology, will present "Approach to Management of Status Epilepticus in the ICU;" Dr. Matthew E. Kutcher, UMMC assistant professor of trauma surgery and critical care, will present "Intra-abdominal Hypertension/Abdominal Compartment Syndrome;" and Dr. Jorge Castaneda, UMMC assistant professor of nephrology, will present "Albumin in the ICU" as part of the Southeast Chapter of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's "Bite-Sized Lecture Series" scheduled from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at UMMC.

Women at Risk founder to discuss health care's role in trafficking

​Rebecca McDonald, founder and president of Women at Risk International, will give the Division of Continuing Health Professional Education and School of Medicine Community Service Team presentation, "Health Care's Role in Sex Trafficking," from 1-5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the student union.

The presentation will include information about what communities are at risk, how to identify victims and how to report suspected trafficking.

UM pharmacology faculty to explore cannabinoids' brain effects

Dr. Nicole Ashpole, assistant professor of pharmacology and research assistant professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Mississippi, will give the UMMC Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "Exploring the Effects of IGF-1 and Cannabinoids in the Aging Brain," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in room N318 (classroom 3A) in the North Wing.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Selected graduate students from diverse backgrounds in a range of academic disciplines will participate in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive competition to provide the best solution for a realistic scenario about complex rural health issues from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in lecture hall 124 in the medical education building.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the event will include participants from Jackson State University, Mississippi College, Mississippi State University, the University of Mississippi and UMMC. A reception will follow the competition.

Wednesday, Oct. 30

Research AV to host chat over coffee

Dr. Richard Summers, associate vice chancellor for research, will host a “Coffee Talk” presentation from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the J. Lincoln Arceneaux Conference Room (Room R136).

Tuesday, Nov. 5

Population Health to host ribbon-cutting, open house, food drive

The John D. Bower School of Population Health will host a ribbon-cutting, holiday open house and food drive from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the second-floor lobby of the Translational Research Center.

Following the ribbon-cutting, tours of the school will be offered. Guests are invited to help the school's faculty and staff celebrate Thanksgiving by bringing non-perishable food items for donation to the EversCare Food Pantry.

Refreshments will be available.

S. Carolina Greenville faculty to tout equal pay for equal work

Dr. Kacey Eichelberger of the South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville/Prisma Health-Upstate, will give the UMMC Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds presentation, "Equal Pay for Equal Work in Academic Medicine: A Primer for Those Who Care," from 7-7:50 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.
